The painting accompanying this reflection on personal power depicts a Mayan facing the winged serpent, Kukulkan (Quetzalcoatl, Gucumatz), at the dawn of time, receiving all its wisdom from this mythical being. In reality, the myth of the feathered serpent alludes to each one of us; ancient myths are inclusive of humanity, not exclusive. The sacred serpent is actually our spinal cord and brain, upon which our entire life depends. The personal power of a human being depends on how well one cares for this serpent of life that is within us and that we ourselves are; all organic systems, including the heart, depend on the spinal cord. Virtues such as patience, serenity, selfless love, and other values strengthen the nervous system, giving vitality to the spinal cord, and this increases our personal power.
