Unlike the Quetzal (Kukulkan or Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent), which possesses the humble and uniformly green color of the forest with no desire to stand out; its red chest, a symbol of divine will, stands out prominently when it flies. The difference between the quetzal and the macaw is that the macaw accepts captivity, while the quetzal does not, as it dies if caged. Vanity leads us to inaction, to the idle contemplation of oneself in the mirror of illusion (maya, in Sanskrit Hindu), and thus we remain prisoners, while humility leads us to altruistic and elevated actions and to spiritual freedom.
